What it is, who it's for, and why it matters
What it is
Venetian blinds are horizontal slat blinds operated by a tilt mechanism (for daylight) and a lift mechanism (to raise the stack). Slats are made from real timber, engineered faux-wood, or extruded aluminium. Each blind is cut to the millimetre for your window and balanced so it rises evenly across the full width.
Who it's for
Owners who want fingertip control of light and privacy without the visual weight of a shutter. They suit kitchens, home offices, bathrooms, conservatories and any room where you need to angle daylight rather than block it.
When to specify it
Specify Venetians when you want privacy with a view, when ceiling height makes a tall curtain impractical, or when you need a high-cycle blind for a daily-use room. Lead time 2–4 weeks; emergency fits possible from stock.
Why professional matters
A 1-degree tilt difference between blinds in adjacent windows is visible from across the room. Off-the-shelf widths cannot achieve that, we cut and balance every blind to its individual opening so the tilt line stays parallel across the wall.
Get the spec wrong and it costs you more than the original install
Cheap Venetians fail in predictable, expensive ways.
Real risks if ignored
- Thin aluminium slats (under 25 micron) bend permanently the first time a child or pet grabs them.
- Stapled cotton ladder tapes rot in bathroom humidity within 18 months.
- Looped cords are a known choking hazard, non-compliant blinds in rental properties expose landlords to legal liability under BS EN 13120.
- Faux-wood blinds wider than 1.5m sag in the middle because the headrail is under-engineered.
Common spec mistakes
- Buying online without confirming the recess depth, a 50mm slat needs 65mm of recess to stack cleanly.
- Ignoring tilt-control side (left vs right), half the time it ends up on the side blocked by furniture.
- Choosing real wood for a steamy en-suite, within a year the slats cup and the paint lifts.
- Specifying a single blind across a wide window instead of a coupled pair on a single headrail.
We solve every one of these on the survey: we measure recess depth, confirm furniture clearance, recommend the right slat material for the room's humidity, and quote the correct child-safe control specification by default.
Five stages, one person, no handovers
- 01
Survey & Material Decision
We bring real-wood, faux-wood and aluminium sample boards. You hold each material against your wall in daylight and decide with the evidence in front of you.
- 02
Measurement & Configuration
Recess vs face-fix decision. Headrail, slat size, ladder colour, tape vs cord, control side, motor option if required. All confirmed in writing.
- 03
Manufacture
Cut to ±1mm and balanced on a calibrated rig before despatch. Typical 2–4 weeks; aluminium often available from stock.
- 04
Fit & Test
Single-visit install. We test full lift, full drop and full tilt on each blind, plus child-safe device compliance, before sign-off.
- 05
Aftercare
10-year written installation guarantee. Replacement slats stocked locally, a damaged slat is a 10-minute fix, not a new blind.
Specific outcomes, not vague promises

Materials, methods and variations
Everything we'd cover with you on a 45-minute survey, written down so you can read it in your own time before booking.
Real Wood Slats
25mm and 50mm Basswood as standard. Lightweight, takes paint and stain evenly, and feels warm against a fabric or panelled wall. Not recommended for bathrooms or unheated rooms.
Faux Wood Slats
PVC-extruded with a wood-grain emboss. Indistinguishable from real wood at arm's length, fully waterproof, and ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and shopfronts. Available in 35mm, 50mm and 63mm.
Aluminium Slats
16mm, 25mm and 35mm in 100+ colours. The thinnest, most compact stack, ideal for narrow recesses and tilt-and-turn windows. Spring-tempered finish resists creasing.
Operation Options
Standard wand-tilt with cord-lift. Cordless lift (push-up / pull-down). Motorised with rechargeable battery or hardwired DC. Smart-home integration via Somfy, Eve and Matter-over-Thread.
Tape vs Cord
Cord-route blinds let pinhole daylight through the route holes, fine for kitchens. Tape-route blinds (a fabric tape covers the route holes) give a tighter blackout and a more decorative finish, usual choice for living rooms.
Recess vs Face Fix
Recess fits inside the window opening for a clean architectural look, needs minimum 65mm depth for a 50mm slat. Face-fix mounts on the wall or architrave above, better for shallow reveals and stone mullions.
Residential vs Commercial
Commercial fits specify reinforced headrails, sealed motors and IP44-rated controls for daily-cycle use in offices, salons and clinics. We hold trade accounts with all three major UK manufacturers.
Honest answers, the ones we give on the doorstep
How much do Venetian blinds cost?
Wooden Venetian blinds from approximately £180 per window fitted, with faux-wood and aluminium options available at lower price points. Every quote is fixed and includes child-safe controls.
Real wood or faux wood, which is better?
For dry, heated rooms, real wood looks and feels warmer. For any room that gets steam (bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, conservatories), faux-wood is the correct specification, it will not warp, cup or peel.
Are they child-safe?
Every blind we install meets BS EN 13120, either cordless lift, motorised, or fitted with a tensioned safety device that snaps under load.
Can you motorise an existing blind?
Sometimes, depends on headrail compatibility. We can assess on a quick survey and confirm honestly whether retrofit makes sense or a new blind is more cost-effective.
What slat size should I choose?
25mm for small kitchen and bathroom windows. 50mm, the most-fitted size, for living rooms, bedrooms and offices. 63mm only on very large windows where the view matters more than the privacy.
Will they fit in a shallow recess?
Aluminium fits in recesses as shallow as 25mm. Faux-wood needs 50mm minimum. Real wood needs 65mm. We confirm depth on survey.
Do you fit in conservatories?
Yes, but specify faux-wood or aluminium only. Temperature swings in a conservatory will distort real wood within a year.
How long until installation?
Stock aluminium often within the week. Faux-wood and made-to-order real wood typically 2–4 weeks from survey.
