What it is, who it's for, and why it matters

What it is

A roller blind is a single fabric panel that rolls onto a tubular metal headrail. The simplest blind type in concept, the most demanding in execution: width tolerance is ±1mm or the fabric tracks sideways within a month.

Who it's for

Owners who want a minimal, modern look, clean lines, no slats, no folds, no visible mechanism. Especially common in bedrooms (blackout for shift workers, parents, nurseries), kitchens (wipe-clean PVC), and bathrooms (waterproof).

When to specify it

Specify rollers when the room calls for visual quiet, somewhere a busy Venetian or patterned Roman would feel cluttered. Lead time typically 2 weeks; blackout-critical orders for nurseries are fast-tracked.

Why professional matters

Off-the-shelf rollers are sold in 5cm increments. A 158cm-wide window gets a 160cm blind with 1cm of overhang each side, light leaks, and the cassette doesn't sit flush. We cut to the exact millimetre and recess inside the rebate so the room is genuinely dark.

What goes wrong

Get the spec wrong and it costs you more than the original install

Most failed roller-blind installs share the same three causes.

Real risks if ignored

  • Spring mechanisms (the cheap kind on internet rollers) fail within 18 months, the blind drops in the middle of the night.
  • Cheap chains snap at the join and the entire fabric needs to be re-rolled by hand onto the tube.
  • Side-light gaps make 'blackout' fabric pointless, a nursery still gets 200 lux from a 5mm gap in summer.
  • Wrong-sided control means the chain hangs over a basin, a hob or the cot.

Common spec mistakes

  • Buying a 'blackout' fabric without a blackout cassette, you lose 90% of the benefit.
  • Ordering one wide blind on a wide window, fabric over 2m wide telescopes (rolls unevenly).
  • Ignoring the fabric's UV rating, south-facing rooms fade unrated fabrics within 18 months.
  • Choosing a printed pattern without checking pattern repeat against the blind width, the print ends up off-centre.

We address every one of these at survey: blackout fabric pairs with a U-channel side cassette by default, wide windows split into coupled pairs on one headrail, and we confirm control side against your room layout, not against an order form.

Materials, methods and variations

Everything we'd cover with you on a 45-minute survey, written down so you can read it in your own time before booking.

Fabric Types

Blackout (zero light through the fabric weave). Dim-out (90% block, retains soft glow). Light-filtering (privacy with diffused daylight). Voile / sheer (privacy by day only). Solar-screen mesh (UV rejection without losing the view). Each available in waterproof, antimicrobial and FR variants.

Cassette & Side-Channel Options

Open roll (the tube visible, modern, minimal). Cassette (a metal or fabric pelmet covers the tube). Side U-channels (essential for blackout, block the side-light gap). Bottom seal (essential for total blackout in nurseries).

Control Options

Standard chain with tensioned safety device. Cordless spring lift (push-up / pull-down). Motorised with rechargeable battery (no wiring) or hardwired DC. Smart-home: Somfy, Eve, Matter, Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit.

Double Roller / Day & Night

Two blinds on one bracket, a sheer for daytime privacy with light, and a blackout or dim-out for evening. Ideal for north-facing bedrooms and home offices.

Waterproof Bathroom Specification

PVC-coated polyester with sealed tube, plastic chain, and rust-proof bracket. Resists mould and can be wiped with diluted bleach. Recommended above showers and over baths.

Residential vs Commercial

Commercial fits in salons, clinics and offices specify FR fabric to BS 5867 Part 2 Type B and reinforced chain. We hold the relevant fire-test certificates and supply them with the invoice.

Frequently asked

Honest answers, the ones we give on the doorstep

How much do roller blinds cost?

From approximately £95 per window fitted for a standard light-filtering blind. Blackout linings and side U-channels available at additional cost.

How dark is 'blackout'?

Blackout fabric alone blocks ~99% of light through the fabric, but light still escapes around the sides and bottom. With our standard U-channel + bottom-seal upgrade we routinely measure under 5 lux at midday in summer, dark enough for shift-worker sleep.

Will it fit my window if it's slightly out of square?

Yes, we measure both top and bottom of the recess and order to the smaller of the two so the blind cannot bind.

Can I have a roller in the bathroom?

Yes, specify waterproof PVC fabric, sealed tube and plastic chain. We fit dozens a year above shower windows in Hereford and Ludlow.

Are they child-safe?

Every blind ships with a BS EN 13120-compliant safety device, or upgrades to cordless / motorised as standard.

Can I motorise later?

Often yes, depends on tube and bracket compatibility. We can advise on a no-obligation site visit.

How long is the lead time?

Typically 2 weeks. Nursery blackout orders fast-tracked to 5–7 working days when needed.

Do you do printed fabrics or branded blinds?

Yes, full digital print on blackout and light-filter fabrics. Useful for shopfronts, salons and themed children's rooms.
