Retractable Patio & Shopfront AwningsGerman-Engineered, Wind-RatedSurveyed Across Shropshire & Herefordshire
Add 8–10 weeks of usable outdoor living a year, a properly-fitted, motorised, wind-sensored awning extends in 35 seconds and retracts automatically when conditions change.
10-year frame warranty. Beaufort-rated wind sensors. Owner-fitted, locally serviced.
What it is, who it's for, and why it matters
What it is
A retractable awning is a fabric canopy that extends from a wall-mounted cassette by means of articulated arms tensioned with high-grade steel cables. The fabric is acrylic-coated to repel water, reject UV, and resist mould, typically rated for 50,000 cycles before refurbishment.
Who it's for
Homeowners who want to use their patio in spring and autumn rain showers, businesses with outdoor seating, cafés and restaurants needing shaded customer space, and shopfronts wanting a branded retractable canopy.
When to specify it
Survey in winter or early spring, install before the summer. Standard lead time approximately 2 weeks. Power supply needs to be available within 1.5m of the cassette for motorised units.
Why professional matters
Cheap awnings fail at the elbow joint (arm articulation) or the fabric arrives stitched off-grain so it sags within a season. Premium awnings, properly surveyed, correctly motorised, with a wind sensor, last 15+ years.
Get the spec wrong and it costs you more than the original install
Awnings are an outdoor product carrying weather load, small specification errors become big problems fast.
Real risks if ignored
- Under-specified arms collapse under gusty wind, a 3m projection in 35mph wind exerts huge load on the elbow.
- Manual awnings get left out in surprise storms, we are called to replace torn-fabric and bent-arm sets every spring.
- Wall fixings into render-on-blockwork without resin anchors pull straight out in moderate wind.
- Cheap acrylic fabric fades unevenly within 2 summers, premium spun-acrylic carries a 5-year colour-fade warranty.
Common spec mistakes
- Ordering by projection alone without confirming the cassette can be wall-mounted at the correct height (minimum 2.4m for a 3m projection).
- Skipping the wind sensor, a £140 sensor saves a £900 fabric replacement.
- Choosing fabric for the in-store sample rather than the in-daylight outdoor look, colours read very differently in shade vs sun.
- Specifying a single wide awning where the patio would be better served by a pair with independent control.
We survey wall construction (brick, blockwork, render, timber-frame), confirm fixing strategy, recommend the correct frame for the projection, and specify the wind sensor + power supply as standard. No surprises after install.
Five stages, one person, no handovers
- 01
Patio / Shopfront Survey
We measure the wall, confirm fixing substrate, check projection clearance (gates, gutter overhang, drainpipes), and discuss usage pattern.
- 02
Fabric & Frame Sign-Off
Fabric chosen from outdoor-grade swatches in daylight. Frame colour matched (white, anthracite, custom RAL). Motor and wind-sensor confirmed. Written quote.
- 03
Manufacture
German-engineered cassette and arms; fabric cut and welded (not stitched) on a heat-edge welder. Typical 4–6 weeks.
- 04
Install
Half-day for residential, full day for commercial. Resin-anchored fixings as standard. Power, motor and wind-sensor commissioned on the day.
- 05
Service & Aftercare
10-year frame warranty, 5-year fabric warranty. Annual service visits available, recommended for commercial units.
Specific outcomes, not vague promises
More Usable Outdoor Time
8–10 extra weeks of patio season per year, light rain and strong sun become non-issues.
UV Protection
Outdoor-grade acrylic blocks 98% of UV, protects skin, decking, and outdoor furniture.
Wind-Rated Operation
Sensored motorised units retract automatically above your set threshold (typically 4 on the Beaufort scale).
Branded Shopfront
Full-colour digital print on shopfront awnings, your branding visible from across the street, retractable when not needed.
Long Service Life
Premium frames carry a 10-year warranty. Fabric replacement (when eventually needed) keeps the original cassette and arms.
Increases Property Value
A fitted, motorised patio awning is a feature on estate agent listings.
Materials, methods and variations
Everything we'd cover with you on a 45-minute survey, written down so you can read it in your own time before booking.
Cassette Types
Full-cassette: fabric and arms enclosed when retracted, best for year-round outdoor use, fabric protected from weather and bird debris. Semi-cassette: arms exposed when retracted, fabric protected, a cost-effective compromise. Open frame: minimal cover, lowest cost, suited to seasonal or covered installs.
Projection & Width
Standard projections 1.5m to 4m. Widths up to 6.5m as a single unit, larger by coupling two cassettes on a shared bracket. The relationship between projection and height matters, a 4m projection needs at least 2.7m mounting height.
Fabric Range
Spun-acrylic in plain, stripe and custom-print options. UV-rated, water-resistant, mould-resistant, and colour-fast for 5+ years. FR-treated fabric available for commercial use to BS 5867 Part 2 Type B.
Motor & Control
Somfy RTS as standard, io for smart-home integration. Hand transmitter included. Wall switch optional. Sun, wind and rain sensors available as add-ons, the wind sensor is strongly recommended on any unit over 3m wide.
LED & Heater Integration
Integrated LED strip on the front bar for evening use. Infrared patio heaters can be mounted into the cassette underside for shoulder-season warmth.
Commercial Shopfront Specification
Cassette colour matched to the shop fascia. Full-bleed digital print of branding on the fabric. Wind sensor mandatory for retail safety. We supply pull-test and CE certificates on commercial installs.
Honest answers, the ones we give on the doorstep
How much does an awning cost?
Budget awnings from approximately £1,350 installed. Top-specification motorised awnings from approximately £2,800 installed. Every quote includes the wind sensor as standard.
Can I have an awning if I have a pebble-dashed wall?
Yes, we use resin-bonded fixings through the render into the substructure. We assess at survey. If the substrate is unsuitable we say so and don't proceed.
How wind-resistant are they?
Frames are rated to Beaufort 5–6 deployed. Sensored units retract automatically above your chosen threshold, typical setting is Beaufort 4 (moderate breeze).
Will it leak in rain?
Acrylic fabric is water-resistant, light rain runs off the slope. Heavy or sustained rain pools at the front bar; we recommend retracting in prolonged downpour. Sensored rain detection available.
How long is the lead time?
Approximately 2 weeks for standard awnings; printed shopfront awnings 3–4 weeks.
Do you service awnings?
Yes, annual service available, recommended for commercial. Includes arm-cable tension check, motor function test, fabric inspection and gutter clearance.
Will it need planning permission?
Domestic awnings generally fall under permitted development. Commercial shopfronts in conservation areas (like Ludlow town centre) often require listed-building or conservation-area consent. We advise on the day.
What's the difference between cheap and premium awnings?
Frame quality (German-engineered vs imported casting), fabric quality (spun-acrylic vs woven-acrylic), motor brand (Somfy vs unbranded), and welded vs stitched seams. We only fit the premium specification because we service what we sell.
